Sri Lankans in Boston celebrate the ‘Sri Lanka Day’
The Sri Lanka Association of New England (SLANE) organized a Sri Lanka Day festival in Acton, Boston, providing an opportunity for Sri Lankans and Americans to celebrate Sri Lanka’s rich heritage through traditional music, dance, food, and community engagements. This event featured a blend of Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim cultural items including a mini-‘perahera’. It also presented a variety of dishes from Sri Lankan cuisine for the visitors.
Charge d’ Affaires Madhuka Wickramarachchi, making remarks at the inauguration of the event, underlined the vital role that the diaspora organizations carry out in promoting Sri Lankan culture overseas. He appreciated the fact that all ethnic groups in Sri Lanka have been symbolized at this Sri Lanka festival. Charge d’ Affaires also recalled the generous contribution made by the Sri Lankan community members in Massachusetts during the recent Ceyclone Ditwah and also appreciated the fact that the contributions made during this event will also be channeled to worthy courses of education sector developments in Uva province.
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Washington D.C., the Permanent Representation of Sri Lanka in New York and the Consulate General in Los Angeles, continue to encourage the Sri Lankan organizations to organize different cultural events which foster Sri Lankan culture in the U.S. and expand the people-to-people contact.
