Sri Lankans in the United States
The Sri Lankan community in the United States, although numerically smaller than other South Asian diasporas, has gained prominence because of its rapid growth, high educational attainment, economic stability, and extensive transnational connections.
They include legal migrants, U.S.-born second- and subsequent-generations of Sri Lankan Americans.
Significant populations of Sri Lankan Americans reside in major states such as California, New York, Texas, New Jersey, and Maryland in the US. Staten Island in New York City hosts the largest and most prominent Sri Lankan ethnic enclave in the U.S., featuring Sri Lankan grocery stores, restaurants, and cultural sites.
The Sri Lankan diaspora is characterized by social and ethnic diversity, with members practicing various faiths and following different cultural traditions. The U.S. is home to numerous Sri Lankan Buddhist temples and Hindu temple networks that serve as venues for transmitting Sri Lankan cultural traditions across generations for both Sri Lankans as well as Americans.
Various active diaspora organizations, including the Sri Lanka America Association of Southern California (SLAASC), Sri Lanka Association of New England (SLANE), and Sri Lanka Association of Washington D.C. (SLAWDC), promotes Sri Lanka in several aspects. These organizations also contribute to Sri Lanka's development by sourcing donations and providing humanitarian assistance.
Over the years, Sri Lankan diaspora has significantly enhanced people-to-people relations and contributed to Sri Lanka's public diplomacy and national image. They continue to facilitate economic, knowledge, and cultural exchanges between both nations.
