The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Washington D.C, in collaboration with the International Club of DC, hosted a reception on 18 September 2026 at the Embassy premises promoting Sri Lanka as a premier tourist destination and showcasing the world-renowned Ceylon tea and gastronomical food items among US nationals. A large membership of the International Club of DC gathered at this occasion.
While welcoming the guests to the vibrant evening, Charge d’ Affaires Madhuka Wickramachchi invited the audience to visit Sri Lanka to experience the rich culture, island’s tropical splendour, and serendipity. He recalled the fellow American author Mark Twain’s famous words during his journey to Sri Lanka a century ago and elaborated on the exceptional diversity Sri Lanka offers to the tourists specially in culture, natural beauty, history and adventure.
The evening was a fusion of the traditional cultural performances displayed by several Sri Lankan dance troupes in the DMV area. These live performances provided the audience a glimpse of Sri Lanka’s rich dance traditions through distinctive rhythms, costumes, and movements. The guests enjoyed traditional Sri Lankan cuisine that offered an authentic taste of the country’s hospitality, culinary traditions, and distinctive flavours. The guests were also provided with an opportunity to taste freshly brewed hot and iced tea with a view to promote Ceylon Tea.
The tea, food, and cultural performances, together created an engaging experience that encouraged greater interest in Sri Lanka as a tourism destination among American audiences.
The International Club of DC, with a membership of professionals from different sectors, brought a large and diverse group as guests to the event. The club promotes international cultural experiences through art, music, dance, theatre, and opportunities to enjoy cuisines from around the world.
The event was organized with a view to strengthen people-to-people ties between Sri Lanka and the United States and to highlight Sri Lanka as an attractive destination for affluent and niche American travellers who are interested in culture, adventure, natural beauty and warm hospitality.
